Weight

Considerations
The question about the weight of the hub excercises many minds. Two kgs extra may be totally unacceptable for racers, others see no problem at all. Everyone has to decide for themselves, but take this into consideration:
  • Critics compare the weight of a NuVinci™ equiped bike with a super light non-Nuvinci bike, so they claim the increase will be 4 kgs. It would be fairer to only compare similar bikes.
  • Ok, the hub adds about 2½kg to the weight of the bike: This is about 10% of the weight of a bike, but only about 2% of the total weight bike+biker. And what about the weight of a wintercoat, keychain or bags? And what about the diet you took last week ?
  • In normal (Dutch) conditions the weight increase is hardly noticable. I would like to know if the increase in weight is noticable going uphill.
  • Lifing the bike, the weight increase is noticable, but how often do you lift your bike?
  • The hub is only available for commuterbikes because of the weight. I expect lighter hubs next year. I weight a real problem? Keep watching the user reviews on this site?

Some more facts:
The NuVinci™ hub weighs between 4.16 kg and 4.28 kg including freewheel and extras.
A Shimano Nexus INTER-8 hub weighs 1.75 kg excluding freewheel and extras.
A Rohloff Speedhub 500/14 weighs between 1.7 kg and 1.8 kg excluding freewheel and extras.

Comparisons Still to be translated...
Een derailleurversnelling is op het eerste gezicht veel lichter, maar vergeet niet dat je naast de achterderailleur en cassette ook te maken hebt met een voorderailleur en 2 extra voorbladen. Bovendien is de ketting een stuk langer (maar wel dunner).

Laat de afweging niet alleen van het gewicht afhangen. Een (gewichts)vergelijking met een derailleurversnelling gaat niet op: de derailleur zal het altijd winnen, maar heeft als nadeel dat het zeer onderhoudsgevoelig is.
Een (gewichts)vergelijking met een Shimano naaf is ook altijd in het voordeel van de Shimano. Maar de Shimano 7 of 8 heeft wel als nadeel de grote stappen tussen de onderlinge versnellingen.

En moet de NuVinci™ qua prestatie nu met een Shimano naaf of een Rohloff naaf vergeleken worden? Qua gewicht verliest de NuVinci™ van beide. De Rohloff is veel robuuster dan de Shimano en heeft een groter bereik (500%). Daar staat wel tegenover dat de Rohloff veel duurder is en (net als de Shimano naaf) niet onderhoudsvrij is.
