De NuVinci™ hub
Introduction
The NuVinci™ hub is a new concept introduced in 2007. Dutch bike manufacturer Batavus implemented this hub in three bikes from their collection, but does not advertise
the NuVinci™ concept very much. Maybe Batavus is waiting for user reviews. Of course this has some consequences for potential buyers: they don't know where they stand.
This site is setup to explain the technique about NuVinci™ and tho gather user experiences, so that buyers can make a biased choice.
The technique
By using balls instead of using toothed wheels NuVinci™ Fallbrook Technologies succeeded in creating a continouos gearbox. In short: the hub has an input and an outputdisk with rotating balls in between. These balls rotate around an axle that can tilt.
By tilting a difference in speed occurs between the input and output disk: a gearbox.
Tilting of course is continuous to both sides, so a ratio of 0.5 - 1.75 is possible. Tilting can occur at any moment even at a standstill, so when shifting there is no need to reduce force on the pedals.
Look at the NuVinci™ factsheet (Dutch) for more information.
Fallbrook Technologies gave Batavus exclusive rights to the NuVinci&trade hub in 2007.
Thanks to this innovation the Batavus Adagio Nuvinci bike won the "Bike of the Year" 2007 award. The Batavus Ouverture NuVinci is less luxurious but also a lot cheaper. The Batavus Personal Bike NuVinci is the Nuvinci™ version of the popular "Rent-a-Bike" of Batavus.
